SHAREDBOOK INC. ADDS MICHAEL CAIRNS AS CHIEF REVENUE OFFICER;
FIVE OTHER NEW STAFF MEMBERS ALSO JOIN TALENTED TEAM
Growth Attributable to Higher Education Community Embrace of AcademicPub
New York, NY, October 25, 2011 - SharedBook Inc., parent company of AcademicPub™, has named veteran publishing and multimedia executive Michael Cairns to the newly created position of Chief Revenue Officer. The company also added five new staff members to its talented team of professionals who are changing the economics of publishing by rewriting the rules on how books are created, assembled and distributed.
Michael Cairns was most recently Managing Partner of Information Media Partners (IMP), which he established in 2006 after departing RR Bowker, where he had served as President since 2001. At IMP, Cairns completed a variety of strategic consulting engagements for AARP, the Book Industry Study Group, Online Computer Library Center and Wolters Kluwer. He was also a Co-Founder and Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Mywire.com, a news and information aggregator. Prior to Bowker, Cairns was a Principal Consultant in the Entertainment, Media and Communications practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he completed engagements at media companies such as Simon & Schuster, Thomson Learning (Cengage), Reed Elsevier, Ogilvy & Mather and Interpublic Group. Mr. Cairns began his publishing career at Macmillan, Inc. immediately after he received an MBA from Georgetown University.
The five other new SharedBook staff members are Leury Hidalgo, Web Designer; Sylvia Kates, Front End Coder; Kate Lopaze, Production Editor; Alyssa Montalbano, Marketing Assistant; and Spencer Soloway, Social Media Manager. This quintet of newcomers, and Cairns, will be based at the company's new headquarters office on William Street in lower Manhattan.
As Web Designer, Leury Hidalgo is responsible for directing SharedBook's look and feel by - among other responsibilities - designing e-mails, banner ads, rich media and microsites. He joins SharedBook from Return Path, and is completing his degree at the New York City College of Technology.
Demonstrating how critical SharedBook's web design and development work is to serving its growing base of customers, Sylvia Kates has joined the company as Front End Coder. A graduate of Hunter College, Kates provides HTML, CSS and JQuery coding for the company's sites and outreach.
Kate Lopaze is also new to the SharedBook team in the role of Production Editor, with specific responsibility for management of publisher relationships as well as facilitating the addition of books, cases and articles to the AcademicPub Content Library. Prior to joining SharedBook, Lopaze worked for Kaplan Publishing, after achieving her B.A. in English at the University of Connecticut, and her master's in publishing and writing at Emerson College.
In recognition of AcademicPub's rapid and dramatic impact in the higher education community, Alyssa Montalbano has joined SharedBook as Marketing Assistant, where she is responsible for execution of awareness and outreach programs. Montalbano previously served as a sales assistant at Brides Magazine, and is a journalism graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.
Spencer Soloway completes the roster of six new additions to the SharedBook team, serving in the newly created position of Social Media Manager, with responsibility for developing and enhancing the company's profile on sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Previously, Soloway provided digital operations, marketing and management support at Fax 1 in Portland, OR. He received his B.A. in theater at Hamilton College.
Since its launch in late April 2011 with 16 publishers, AcademicPub's Content Library has grown more than six fold, demonstrating that the creativity and relevancy of using custom books in the classroom has gained considerable momentum. A complete list of all AcademicPub publishing partners can be found here.
The embrace of AcademicPub by instructors, across disciplines and around the world, has spurred parent SharedBook Inc. to continue to update the functionality of the platform, including its ability to be white labeled by third parties, the speed and relevance of search results within the AcademicPub Library, and the ease with which books - both printed and eBooks - can be ordered.
SharedBook's technology platform assembles, composes, prices and delivers custom books for educators, consumers, online publishers and enterprises. AcademicPub, built especially for educators, allows for immediate creation and inclusion of copyright-cleared, custom course materials from anywhere, such as web articles, self-generated lectures or with material from the AcademicPub Library. Digital or print distribution generates a fast and easy way for educators to provide an engaging educational experience, with lower prices and up-to-the-minute materials for students. Headquartered in New York since 2004, SharedBook Inc. is privately held and can be found at www.sharedbook.com.
